Effective from 31 March, 2006, BS 6807 :2006 supersedes BS 6807:1990 and become the current available standard to describes methods of test for Assessment of the ignitability of mattresses, upholstered divans and upholstered bed bases when subjected to flaming types of primary and secondary ignition sources of differing severities.

This British Standard extends the range of ignition sources provided by BS EN 597-1 [1] and BS EN 597-2 [2] . It should be read in conjunction with BS EN 597-1 and BS EN 597-2 for the complete range of primary and secondary sources.

This is a full revision of the standard which principal change is a clarification of progressive smouldering ignition; minor editorial changes have also been made. It also clearly states the sequence of tests on a sample either with bed covers or without bed covers.

Flammability is the critical aspect for all types of upholstered furniture. Domestic products must meet the specific regulations in the UK. Upholstered furniture and beds for use in hotels and other contract situations must also meet the regulations with higher requirement.
